ORIGIN
Inspired by the author’s childhood and her magical son, this 2500-word short story competition entry is now being developed into a children’s book.
Nicholas has a problem. He can’t control his anger. And when he gets mad, he shrinks things. Not even his service unicorn, Aurora Borealis, can calm him down enough to prevent him from getting suspended from school.
When his mom makes the link between Nicholas’s Autism and the intensity of his feelings, she gives him a magical book. Within its pages, Nicholas discovers the secret to overpowering his pain and defeating his anger. But returning to school puts his new knowledge and self-control to the test when he comes face to face with Sam, his biggest bully.
Nicholas must learn self-control to defeat his bullies, both external and internal, so he can turn his Autism into the magical power it has the potential to be.
FEEDBACK
“The way you reimagine autism as a magic power is emotionally moving and compelling. The character of Nicholas is well drawn and the conflict he faces is clear. I could see this piece as a beloved children’s book.”
